Spring Lecture Series Begins Today

Join us today (3/28) at 2:00, as we welcome Fred Haynes to the museum.  His talk will be  about the “Wild Orchids of Western New York”
The Zurich Bog in Wayne County, NY, is home to several rare and protected orchid species that thrive in its acidic peatland environment.
Spotting an orchid in the wild can be a thrill. Some are eye-catching and spectacularly colorful. Others are small and harder to find and identify.
In this presentation, we will discuss the wild orchids Fred has seen and photographed in western New York State, and the parks, preserves, and habitats where they were found. Zurich Bog is arguably the foremost orchid site in western New York, but there are several others.
We will learn the identifying features and the unique parasitic and symbiotic relationships some orchid species have with other plants and fungi in the woodlands and wetlands.
The lectures are free of charge (donations gratefully accepted). Come early for a good seat.
