September is a busy month for the Historical Society.
We start on Thursday, Sept. 10 with our quarterly meeting. Jane Oakes will present “It’s Apple Cider Time!” Ms. Oakes has been involved with historic education for over 50 years,
Apple cider, both sweet and hard, played an important role in early American life. You’ll see images of our early cider mills and where they were located, learn about the process of cider making, which apple varieties were favored, and celebrate the season with a sample of locally produced sweet cider.
We hope you will join us for this very special program held in one of the leading apple-producing counties in the US.
The Wednesday after this meeting, on 9/16, we will hold our annual movie night at the Ohmann theater in Lyons. This year’s selection will be “1776”, a musical retelling of the American Revolution’s political struggle in the Continental Congress to declare independence. The doors open at 6:00, with the movie at 6:30. You won’t want to miss this 1972 classic, to which both critics and fans give a big “thumbs up”. Plus, you will be helping the Society at the same time – a win-win.
Three days later, on Saturday 9/19 from 1 to 3:00, we will dedicate the Richard M. Ware exhibit that was recently installed on the north wall of the museum’s main room.
An artist, Ware was well known for his quiet watercolors of familiar scenes. In 1933, he began his work as a production artist in Batavia. In 1954, Ware joined the art department of Bloomer Brothers in Newark, creating designs for their carton products. After his retirement, he was a familiar figure at his easel in the area countryside. Over the years Dick had several one-man shows and received honorable mention at a prestigious art show in Cooperstown.
Wrapping up September will be an event at the schoolhouse on the corner of Marbletown and Miller Rds. Please join us Saturday, September 26th from 12 – 3 p.m. for our second annual Harvest Open House. There will be several vendors there including Harts Confections.
