N-AHS will hold “A Day in the Life” event on Monday, April 8, 2024.   We hope that you will participate in A Day in the Life of Arcadia* as it will serve as a time capsule for future lovers of history to enjoy.  We chose this day because of the total solar eclipse, of course.  But the submissions do not have to be eclipse related.  They can feature everyday life, nature or anything else that inspires you on that day.

We ask that you enter your photos, poetry, stories and/or impressions online (see the link above).  You cannot start uploading for the event until April 8th, but there is a testing option that is active now, so you can see how it works.  You will have until April 13th at 11:59 PM to upload your material.

There are three different categories for the event.  Each category has its own rules posted.  You will need to enter your name and email address/phone number to participate, but that’s for identification purposes only.  Your information is not publicly seen and will not be used for any other purpose.  The testing option and voting for your favorite photo do not require any user input.

If you lack access or if you are uncomfortable with the process, you can send your hard copy submissions to 120 High St, Newark, and we will scan and upload for you.

All society members are invited to contribute, whether or not you still live in Arcadia Township.  Arcadia residents can also contribute.  The project is A Day In the Life of Arcadia, but we will consider entries from out of the area, as long as they are 4/8/2024 related.

* By Arcadia, we mean Arcadia Township, which encompasses Newark

You will not want to miss this year’s program. We are very pleased to have folklorists and musicians Jim Kimball and Karen Canning with us. Mr. Kimball plays fiddle, button accordion, keyboard, musical saw, jaw harp and bones. He is a favorite performer at the Farmer’s Museum in Cooperstown and Genesee Country Museum in Mumford, where he specializes in 19th century popular and folk music traditions.

Mr. Kimball is a noted ethnomusicologist, who teaches music history, world music and classes on American folk music at SUNY Geneseo. He is also the director of the Geneseo String Band.

Hope to see you all there!

Soup with Dick & Jane – Walworth Historical Society Event

Walworth Historical Society will be hosting Cindy Russell, past President of N-WHS,  at their November 20 meeting.  The program that day will include a FREE luncheon with several choices of homemade soups served at Noon.  Following lunch (around 1 PM), Cindy will present her program.  It will be held at the Lodge in Ginegaw Park, Penfield Road, Walworth and it is FREE and OPEN to the PUBLIC.

Describing her program Cindy said:  “Dick, Jane, their family, friends and pets were part of growing up for over 85 million people who learned to read from the 1930s through the 1960s. They remain just about the only characters in the history of American primary education whose names have become household words. The primers that made these characters familiar to almost everyone have come to represent mid-century American culture, as well as collectors’ items. The program will be a nostalgic look at the history of these classic readers through the years, illustrated through the presenter’s collection of original books from the first published Dick and Jane primer in 1930 to the last multi-ethnic edition in 1965.”
