Lilacs Planted In Honor of Bill Verdow

Chris Davis and Jerry Frey

On Saturday, October 10, a lilac bush was planted on the grounds of the Marbletown Schoolhouse in honor of Bill Verdow, who passed away May 6th, 2020.

Bill was one of the founders of the Newark-Arcadia Historical Society, as well as being a Charter Member and Life Member.  He served as secretary from 1993-98, and as Vice President from 2016-20.

In the days before the museum, Bill had wonderful displays of Newark artifacts and memorabilia in Sir William’s Men’s Shop, his store on W. Union St.  Many of these items became the core of the museum’s collection when it opened in 1999. Some are still on permanent display such as the original 1929 Newark Airport banner, a brass Mora script radiator logo,  a 1911 Newark Fair poster and Reed Mfg. Co. products.

We will miss you, Sir William, and we will always think of you when the lilacs blossom in the spring.
