Newark’s T. Spencer Knight Canal Park will be the site for John Zornow’s presentation, “Gone But Not Forgotten”, with slides and narration about Newark’s history.  The date is Thursday, Aug. 20^th at 7:30.  Rain date will be the following week (Thurs. 8/27).

The program is sponsored by the Newark-Arcadia Historical Society. Please bring your own chairs. We ask that unrelated groups or individuals guard their neighbor’s health by not sitting too close. The event is free of charge and open to all. Refreshments will be available.

Mr. Zornow is a frequent speaker at the Newark-Arcadia Museum. He is a past president, writes a weekly historical column for Times of Wayne County, and a Kodak retiree.

The N-AHS museum will be re-opening on Saturday, July 18^th and every Saturday thereafter, from 1:00 to 3:00.  We will open following New York State guidelines, which are some of the best in the nation, and probably even more stringent than what is necessary for our small museum.  Our outlook is for you to have a safe, enjoyable experience, discovering or even re-discovering the fascinating aspects of Arcadia’s past.

We will be requiring that visitors wear face coverings while in the building, and we will provide masks for those who need them.  Hand sanitizer will be available and we have mapped a path through the building that will allow for the greatest space between visitors. The building will have been cleaned before your arrival and spot cleaned as the afternoon goes on.

We ask that you not visit if, in the past 14 days, you have tested positive for Covid-19 or have exhibited any symptoms during that period.

The 2019-20 exhibit, “Hometown Grown: 200 Years of Agriculture”, continues, filling much of the front room. Permanent exhibits include the Erie Canal, Sarah Coventry &  Emmons Jewelry, Jackson & Perkins Rose Co., the Fox Sisters, photos of downtown Newark (1870s-1970s, including some great aerials), Bloomer Bros. Co., and much more.

The museum has a research room and a gift shop.  We ask that gift shop purchases be made by check if possible.  We hope to see you soon.

The Society will be celebrating the holiday season with two upcoming events.

We will host a members and friends reception  on Wednesday, Dec. 4th from 6 to 9 PM.  Come raise a glass of cheer with us, enjoy the tasty treats and see the latest exhibits if you haven’t already.  A friendly gathering.

Then plan to join us at the  Annual Marbletown Schoolhouse Holiday Open House on Sunday, December 8th from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. at the historic one-room Marbletown Schoolhouse located at the corner of Marbletown and Miller Roads.  The Schoolhouse will  be decorated for the holidays and warmed by the cozy wood burning stove, with area craft vendors offering a wonderful variety of items perfect for gift giving.  We have returning vendors such as Old Thyme Spoon Jewelry and Loving Hands craft items, as well as several popular crafts such as unique bags and purses handcrafted from local  Hallagan fabric, locally made maple syrup, jewelry,  essential oil products and adorable children’s winter hats! And you won’t want to leave without purchasing a goodie or two from our Bake Sale. The 2020 N-AHS “Remembering Downtown” calendars will also be available for purchase.  So mark your calendars and stop by! Shop for that special gift, enjoy some holiday treats and experience Christmas in a One-Room Schoolhouse!

If you would like to donate baked good items for the Marbletown Schoolhouse Holiday Craft and Bake Sale, we would really appreciate it.  All proceeds go to support the N-AHS Marbletown Schoolhouse. Items can be dropped off at the Newark Museum Saturday, Dec. 7 from 1-3 p.m. or Sunday, Dec. 8 prior to the Open House at the Schoolhouse between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m.
