John Zornow To Speak Aug. 20th in Newark

Newark’s T. Spencer Knight Canal Park will be the site for John Zornow’s presentation, “Gone But Not Forgotten”, with slides and narration about Newark’s history.  The date is Thursday, Aug. 20th at 7:30.  Rain date will be the following week (Thurs. 8/27).

The program is sponsored by the Newark-Arcadia Historical Society. Please bring your own chairs. We ask that unrelated groups or individuals guard their neighbor’s health by not sitting too close. The event is free of charge and open to all. Refreshments will be available.

Message From the President

Hello friends of N-AHS,

I’m Jim Weiler and I became president of the Society on June 15, 2020.  It’s a challenging time for the Society as it is for the world in general.   We have had to walk down a number of new roads in the past five months, but as the uncertainty has subsided, our path has become clearer.  The museum is now open from 1:00 to 3:00 on Saturdays and we are exploring the possibility of also opening the schoolhouse to the public.  We are hoping to host an outdoor lecture in late August and then again in September if all goes well.  Indoor lectures will have to wait until better times.

I follow Cindy Russell into the presidency.  I can’t hope to match Cindy’s knowledge and perception pertaining to our local history, but I do hope to be an able caretaker of the needs of the organization.  We’re looking forward to the future.

Museum To Open On July 18th

The N-AHS museum will be re-opening on Saturday, July 18th and every Saturday thereafter, from 1:00 to 3:00.  We will open following New York State guidelines, which are some of the best in the nation, and probably even more stringent than what is necessary for our small museum.  Our outlook is for you to have a safe, enjoyable experience, discovering or even re-discovering the fascinating aspects of Arcadia’s past.

We will be requiring that visitors wear face coverings while in the building, and we will provide masks for those who need them.  Hand sanitizer will be available and we have mapped a path through the building that will allow for the greatest space between visitors. The building will have been cleaned before your arrival and spot cleaned as the afternoon goes on.

We ask that you not visit if, in the past 14 days, you have tested positive for Covid-19 or have exhibited any symptoms during that period.

The 2019-20 exhibit, “Hometown Grown: 200 Years of Agriculture”, continues, filling much of the front room. Permanent exhibits include the Erie Canal, Sarah Coventry &  Emmons Jewelry, Jackson & Perkins Rose Co., the Fox Sisters, photos of downtown Newark (1870s-1970s, including some great aerials), Bloomer Bros. Co., and much more.

The museum has a research room and a gift shop.  We ask that gift shop purchases be made by check if possible.  We hope to see you soon.
