2021 Calendars Now Available

The 2021 edition of the popular N-AHS calendar series is now available.  This year’s theme is “Gone, But Not Forgotten!” The price is $10.

The calendars will be available at the museum on Saturdays, 1-3 p.m. or at Grind On Coffee, 212 S. Main St., Mon-Sat, 7 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Alternate time pickup is available by calling 315-331-6409.  You can also purchase by mail by sending a check to Newark-Arcadia Museum, 120 High St., Newark, NY 14513.   Add $3 postage for 1-4 calendars. Orders will be shipped the same day.

14 images of buildings, businesses & places lost to history are featured, including the Capitol Theatre, Newark Diner, Woolworth’s, Freddie’s Tastee-Freez, the Rose Gardens and more. Cover art is by Judi Palermo Shumway.

New Broadcast by Michael Keene

If you enjoyed Michael Keene’s YouTube Premier of “Hart Island”, you may want to catch his next historical documentary, “Madhouse: The Hidden History of Insane Asylums in 19th Century New York”.

The documentary chronicles the history of the establishment of the major insane asylums in New York State along with exploring the lives of some of the remarkable people who worked in these institutions and patients treated there.

Included will be Willard Insane Asylum, the Monroe County Poorhouse, Buffalo State Insane Asylum, NYS Asylum at Utica (Old Main), Binghamton Inebriate Asylum, Hudson River Insane Asylum and others! The program will be told through the use of archival photographs, narration, and original music.

The premier of “Madhouse” will be shown on YouTube on Tuesday, December 1st, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. EST.
