The Museum is a multi-use facility. Of course, its main focus is to display the artifacts and exhibits that are in the Society’s vast collection. It is also a meeting place for public lectures and events, and is a popular class-reunion gathering spot. But a little known value is its utility as a research facility.
The Thelma Prutzman Research Room is well stocked with local history books, atlases, maps, genealogy books, census & cemetery records, Civil War books, and much, much more.
In 1997, the Newark-Arcadia Historical Society purchased the former Church of Christ Scientist building across from the Newark Public Library and Hoffman Clock Museum. By June 1999 improvements had been made. The interior of museum was painted, the carpet replaced, a new furnace with climate control was installed along with a new security system. The museum opened on June 12th of that year.
The museum’s first major exhibit was “Newark, NY – The Rose Capital of America”, followed by “The C.H. Stuart Company – From Stuart’s Nursery to Sarah Coventry”. Every year in June a new exhibit is unveiled.
Come visit and see what’s new.
